This agency advances the arts by supporting individual artists, arts groups, and non-profit organizations — in King County, Washington thanks to the local lodging tax.
Artist Trust
Artist Trust supports art at its core – the creative individual. Creative writers, visual artists, film makers and musicians in Washington State benefit each year through grants, fellowships, and professional seminars.
Fulbright Fellowship One of the best uses of our American tax dollars. The Fulbright Foundation was started by Senator Fulbright after World War II as a way to develop person to person ties between United States and German citizens. My experience as a Fulbright Fellow in at the University of Cape Town, South Africa changed my life. A friend nicknamed this fellowship: the Peace Corps with prestige.
Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle
This organization promotes the value of arts and culture city-wide by making grants to individual artists, cultural organizations, and education projects. They offer excellent on-line resources for freelance artists.
PEN Award for Poetry
PEN Center USA’s annual awards program, established in 1982, is a unique, regional competition that recognizes literary excellence with awards in eleven categories. Past award winners include Barbara Kingsolver, Maxine Hong Kingston, T.C. Boyle, and Paul Thomas Anderson. Winners attend a dinner in Beverly Hills and receive a trophy— it’s the Oscars for writers.
Washington State Book Award (Finalist)
The Washington State Book Awards are administered by The Washington Center for the Book. A beautiful gold sticker and party at Richard Hugo House made this award especially fun. Recognition from my home state means so much to me.

Blue Mountain Center
An artist community in the Adirondacks, of writers, visual artists, composers, and social change activists.
Centrum
A residency on the Olympic Peninsula housed in Fort Warden State Park, Port Townsend, WA.
Fundacion Valparaiso
An international residency in Mojacar, Southern Spain, for poets, musicians, visual artists and writers.
Hedgebrook
This island retreat for women writers worldwide is the only one of its kind. Situated on Whidbey Island; this is my favorite retreat.
Helen Whiteley Center of the University of Washington
The only year-round writers’ and scholars’ retreat based at a marine biology field station; located on Washington’s San Juan Island, this is a reclusive writer’s dream. Fireplaces in each cottage and slate showers. Gorgeous.
The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico
The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico is one of the oldest artist residence programs in the country. Located in the heart of Taos, New Mexico, a four hundred year old multi-cultural community
Jack Straw Writers Program
Not a “residency” in the usual sense of the word, Seattle’s Jack Straw Productions offers local writers voice and presentation training, as well as print, online, live, and broadcast venues for sharing new work.
Millay Colony
Provides one-month residencies to talented writers, composers and visual artists so that they can create new art.
The Tyrone Guthrie Center
The center offers residences to established professional artists from both parts of Ireland and abroad in all the main artistic disciplines.
Ucross Foundation
“Let the big sky expand your dreams,” said novelist Patricia Chao after her residency at the Ucross Foundation. Located on a 20,000-acre ranch in the wide open spaces of northeastern Wyoming, Ucross is a magical setting for individual creative work, reflection, innovation and dreaming.
